Realistically what dad and I saw was awesome, and it’s nice that we can share something like bird watching while we’re hanging out together. We were very fortunate to witness the hawk at work across the street, and I had a ton of fun, running through the possible timelines and realizing that we were probably witnessing a family of birds grow and develop through the seasons, which is cool. Really, really, I just wanted to show off the pictures. But I guess if I had to come to any sort of thesis, it is this: True Crime is as much fiction as it is reality. We color the events as we portray them, and this is only heightened when we produce something for an audience. Life and nature, crime and growth can be contained and described in podcasts, books, and on screen, but we have a tendency to narrativize for entertainment. Take your true crime with a grain of salt. On Big Pine Key, those margins meet their confluence in the Winn-Dixie shopping center, where a Radio Shack still exists, the floodwaters persist, and a gang of cannibal chicken’s roam. It’s these chickens upon which our first observation hinges, although there were wider community effects. Mother hens roost in the bushes. Roosters rest in the trees, and there are, frequently, lines of chicks trailing their parents through the parking-lot. But this population surges, and then drops. Seagulls roost on the roof, key dear roam the roads nearby— often through traffic. There are people too. (They are the ones who feed the chickens fried chicken.) It’s this confluence where we witness the widest effects of the reign of terror caused by a rash of burders. (bird murders.) The chickens scatter to the brush when anyoneone approaches. Seagulls squawk warnings when shadows fall upon them from above. Key deer, well, they mostly don’t do anything. Not even the massive kettles of turkey vultures intimidate them. But it is the fear amongst the fowl which is key, and their too stable numbers. For, while the chickens are ever laying, their numbers remain static. His broad rounded face and dinosaurian arms were tensed at the ready for fishy alarms. He laughed to himself, startling his two peers turned guards, “I’ll escape someday from the Traveler’s backyard.” They shook their own rounded heads, and rolled muffin eyes, “Any attempt to escape would be far from wise. Traveler controls this and the dimensions below. If you try to run, we will have to follow.” Tazo smiled brightly and gave them both a wink. It wouldn’t help his escape if they began to think. For now, it was best he spoke not another word. His potential fishy plan was better left unheard. It was a twinge of caffeinated Kevin power, which had brought him Christmas Cheer this very hour. Landrum - Meet the Author Nathan W Landrum <— That’s him. What are you supposed to write in these things anyway? When I was born, my parents were working in Wupatki National Monument in Arizona. Since then, I’ve grown up in and around National Parks, which has helped me both to love and understand these important historical and natural wonders. I’ve even managed to work in one—taking two brief summer jobs as mate aboard two boats which traveled out to the Dry Tortugas. I learned to pronounce dinosaur names when I was two and progressed with that knowledge into a geology degree. I accidentally turned that into a profession teaching high school science internationally. First in Ha Sefako, Lesotho and then in Nanjing, China. It’s safer to say that I’ve bumbled around the world, than that I’ve traveled it, but so far I’ve managed to make it to 6 continents and more than a dozen countries. I’ve worked in some of them and visited many more. (Still looking for that trip to Antarctica.) Along the way I’ve never stopped writing stories. Some are crazy tales I made up sitting in Starbucks while drinking too much coffee. Some are crunchy sci-fi stories which I’ve put far too much thought into. But the tales which were always closest to me were the stories I wrote in various national parks. Staying long summers in national parks with my dad, I was often the only one my age, so I would populate the parks with people: friends and rivals, knights and pirates, aliens and dinosaurs. When I wasn’t reading, I was filling already wonderful places with even more adventure. When I finally had the opportunity to develop some of my ideas, put them on paper and find a way to share them with others, I knew where to start. The Junior Rangers Investigative Club is fictional, the characters a product of my imagination.
